Product Overview

INCOLOY® alloy A-286 (UNS S66286/W. Nr.1.4980) is an iron-nickel-chromium alloy with additions of molybdenum and titanium. It is age-hardenable for high mechanical properties and maintains good strength and oxidation resistance at temperatures up to about 1300°F (700°C). The high strength and excellent fabrication characteristics make this alloy useful for various components of aircraft and industrial gas turbines, automotive engine fasteners, and offshore oil and gas applications.

Material Characteristics

A-286 offers good fabricability comparable to stainless steels and nickel alloys, making it the material of choice for aerospace gas turbines, industrial fasteners, and high-temperature structural components. Through precisely controlled solution annealing at 980°C and aging at 720°C for 16 hours, this forged ring achieves remarkable strength via fine gamma-prime (Ni3Ti) precipitation throughout the austenitic matrix.

  • Age Hardenable: Gamma-prime (Ni3Ti) precipitation during 720°C aging delivers a 3× strength increase over solution-annealed condition while retaining excellent ductility (25% elongation).
  • High Temperature Strength: Maintains structural integrity and load-bearing capacity at temperatures up to 704°C (1300°F), with good creep-rupture strength during extended high-temperature exposure.
  • Oxidation Resistance: Chromium content (13.5-16%) forms a stable, adherent Cr2O3 protective layer, resisting scaling up to 982°C (1800°F) in air and combustion environments.
  • Excellent Fabricability: Austenitic in all conditions; readily formed, machined, and welded using standard procedures for stainless steels and nickel alloys.
  • Hot Working Range: 1150°C (2100°F) start; final reductions below 980°C (1800°F) should exceed 10% to prevent excessive grain growth.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Nickel (24-27%) and chromium contents provide broad resistance to oxidizing and reducing environments, including sulfide-containing atmospheres.
