Inconel 625 (UNS N06625 / W.Nr. 2.4856) is a solid-solution strengthened nickel-chromium-molybdenum superalloy forging bar engineered for high-strength applications across extreme temperature ranges — from cryogenic conditions up to 2000°F (1093°C). Strengthened by molybdenum and niobium additions, this alloy achieves exceptional mechanical properties without requiring precipitation-hardening treatment, simplifying fabrication while maintaining outstanding performance in aggressive environments.

Inconel 625 is a high-performance nickel-based superalloy that derives its strength from solid-solution hardening by molybdenum (8.0–10.0%) and niobium (3.15–4.15%). Unlike precipitation-hardenable grades such as Inconel 718, Inconel 625 requires no aging heat treatment, which significantly simplifies fabrication, welding, and post-processing while delivering exceptional mechanical properties across a remarkably wide temperature spectrum.
A defining characteristic of Inconel 625 is its virtual immunity to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and outstanding resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion — driven by its high PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) of 48–52. The alloy is non-magnetic, exhibits excellent fatigue strength, and retains high ductility and impact toughness at cryogenic temperatures down to -196°C (-320°F). Its excellent weldability via TIG, MIG, and SMAW processes using ERNiCrMo-3 filler further extends its versatility across demanding applications.

Inconel 625 demonstrates exceptional resistance to localized corrosion in chloride-bearing environments. The Critical Pitting Temperature (CPT) and Critical Crevice Temperature (CCT) values per ASTM G48 are compared below against common stainless steels and nickel alloys:
| Alloy | UNS | PREN | CPT (°C) | CCT (°C) | Test Method |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 316L SS | S31603 | 24–28 | 15–20 | < 0 | ASTM G48 A/B |
| 904L SS | N08904 | 34–38 | 40–50 | 20–25 | ASTM G48 A/B |
| 254 SMO | S31254 | 42–44 | 70–75 | 32–38 | ASTM G48 A/B |
| Inconel 625 | N06625 | 48–52 | ≥ 85 | 40–50 | ASTM G48 A/B |
| Alloy C-276 | N10276 | 65–70 | > 100 | 50–60 | ASTM G48 A/B |
The high PREN of Inconel 625, driven primarily by its elevated molybdenum (8.0–10.0%) and chromium (20.0–23.0%) content, ensures superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater, brine, and acidic chloride solutions. The alloy is virtually immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and intergranular attack, making it a premier choice for offshore, chemical processing, and flue gas desulfurization applications.
