Monel 400 flange is a high-performance nickel-copper alloy component (UNS N04400, W.Nr.2.4360) designed for piping system connections, featuring exceptional corrosion resistance and stable mechanical properties to adapt to harsh industrial environments.
Chemical Composition
Monel 400 is a solid-solution nickel-copper alloy with a well-balanced chemical composition that determines its outstanding performance[7]. The main elements and their content ranges (by weight) are as follows: Nickel (Ni) accounts for 63.0% to 70.0% (minimum 63.0%), which is the primary element providing excellent corrosion resistance and ductility[8]. Copper (Cu) is 28.0% to 34.0%, enhancing resistance to reducing environments and improving machinability[9]. Trace elements include Iron (Fe) ≤ 2.5%, Manganese (Mn) ≤ 2.0%, Silicon (Si) ≤ 0.5%, Carbon (C) ≤ 0.3%, and Sulfur (S) ≤ 0.024%. These trace elements are strictly controlled to avoid embrittlement and maintain the alloy’s structural integrity.
Mechanical Properties
Monel 400 flange maintains excellent mechanical properties in both room temperature and extreme environments, with performance varying slightly by processing condition (annealed or cold-drawn stress relieved). In the annealed state, its typical room-temperature properties include: tensile strength of 70-90 ksi (480-620 MPa), yield strength of 25-50 ksi (170-345 MPa), elongation of 35-60%, and Brinell hardness of 125-190 HB. The alloy has a density of 8.8 g/cm³, elastic modulus of 185 GPa, and melting point ranging from 1300°C to 1350°C (2370°F to 2460°F). It retains good toughness and strength at sub-zero temperatures and can operate stably in high-temperature environments up to 538°C (1000°F).
Key Functions
As a critical connecting component in piping systems, Monel 400 flange serves three core functions. Firstly, it realizes the detachable connection of pipes, valves, pumps, heat exchangers and other equipment, facilitating installation, maintenance and replacement of pipeline components. Secondly, it ensures the airtightness and pressure-bearing capacity of the pipeline system, preventing leakage of medium (liquid or gas) in high-pressure and corrosive environments. Thirdly, it transfers the load between pipeline components, dispersing stress to avoid local damage and ensuring the stable operation of the entire pipeline system. Additionally, its excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical stability extend the service life of the pipeline system and reduce maintenance costs.
Application Scenarios
Thanks to its superior corrosion resistance, high strength and good processability, Monel 400 flange is widely used in various harsh industrial fields
Marine Engineering: It is widely applied in shipbuilding, offshore oil rigs, seawater desalination systems and marine pipeline connections, as it can effectively resist corrosion from seawater and brackish water, avoiding stress corrosion cracking.
Oil and Gas Industry: Used in offshore drilling, oil refineries and hydrocarbon processing equipment, it adapts to high-temperature, high-pressure and sour gas environments, resisting corrosion from hydrogen sulfide and other corrosive media.
Chemical Processing Industry: Suitable for pipeline systems handling aggressive chemicals such as hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid and alkaline solutions, it is widely used in reactors, heat exchangers and chemical storage equipment connections.
Other Fields: It is also used in nuclear power plants (secondary loop systems), aerospace fuel and hydraulic line systems, cryogenic equipment (handling liquefied gases) and electronic components, due to its stable performance in extreme conditions.
Advantages
Monel 400 flange has good weldability and processability, supporting various welding methods such as gas shielded welding and manual arc welding, and can be customized into slip-on, blind, threaded, weld neck and other types according to engineering needs. It complies with international standards such as ASTM B564, ASME SB564 and ANSI B16.5, with size ranges from 1/2" to 24" (DN15 to DN600) and pressure ratings from 150# to 2500# (PN20 to PN420). Compared with commercial pure nickel flanges, it has higher cost performance while maintaining excellent performance, making it a preferred choice for high-demand corrosion-resistant pipeline connections.
